Up to 55mm broad, dark brown, convex, becoming broader with age, with small umbo (central raised bump), smooth, dry.
Bright paprika red, adnexed (narrowly attached to stem) or sinuate, close, with both long and short gills.
Often, but not always, tall and graceful, tapering upwards from a broad base (to 17mm) to 7mm wide at apex and up to 100mm tall. Dull yellow, with bands of dark fibrils. The veil can be seen in immature fruit bodies as yellow, plentiful cobweb-like strands attaching the cap margin to the stem, but these disappear as the cap expands.
Spore print: Brown.
In eucalypt forests and woodlands, often in large groups.
