Common Name: Morel
Species of Morchella are usually known as Morels. They are found in the open forest, including mallee, and are sometimes locally abundant after fire. Although the genus is distinctive in appearance, variation in form and colour leaves one wondering if we have only one variable species (M. elata) or several different kinds! Morels usually fruit in springtime and are highly regarded by some as food. However, the stems should be discarded before cooking as they are tough and indigestible.
