Literally: hedgehog like a 'lattice' or 'trellis', i.e. forming a spiny trellis. The 'stalactite fungus' is a delicate and intricately beautiful, pendulous fungus found on wood in sheltered, damp places such as rainforests.

• Fruiting body

  Consists of a much branched mass, with numerous spines hanging down a total depth of 150 mm or more, but frequently smaller. White to pale cream in colour.
