Amauroderma rude is a hard, woody polypore. The dark brown and slightly velvety stem may be central or lateral and is similar in colour to the cap surface. The white, pored undersurface instantly turns red when bruised. This fungus, along with other woody polypores, has the remarkable ability to envelop grass, twigs and leaves as the fruiting bodies expand.
